A group is any set of people who belong together — a small group, a ministry team, a year group, a choir. Groups give those people a shared conversation and give you something to address a message to.

Creating one

  1. Open Groups in the sidebar.
  2. Switch to the Create Group tab.
  3. Choose a Population method: Manual to hand-pick people and families, Automatic to fill it from filter rules that keep it in sync, or Self-join to let people join with a QR code and link.
  4. Give it a name people will recognise, and a description if the name is not self-explanatory.
  5. For a Manual group, pick the people from your directory, then press Create group. You can add more later with Add members on the group’s page.

Adding people

Add members from your directory, which means someone must exist as a person before they can be in a group. If you are setting up many groups at once, import your people first — a CSV import can put people straight into groups by name, as long as the groups already exist. See Import people from a CSV.

Letting people join themselves

Tick Allow members to self-join on a Manual group, or choose the Self-join method, and the group’s page gets a link and QR code you can print, project or send. People who already belong to your church sign in and join from it — much the easiest way to fill a new group. With Request approval on (the default), each request waits for you on the group’s Request to join tab. Someone with no account at your church cannot join through it. There is no button to replace the link: on a Manual group, turn self-join off, save, and turn it on again to get a new one.

The group conversation

Every group has its own conversation where members send text, images, documents and links. This is base functionality — it works for every group in every church. See Group messaging.
